Word order preference in sign influences speech in hearing bimodal bilinguals but not vice versa: Evidence from behavior and eye-gaze

چکیده

Abstract We investigated cross-modal influences between speech and sign in hearing bimodal bilinguals, proficient a spoken language, its consequences on visual attention during message preparation using eye-tracking. focused spatial expressions which languages, unlike have modality-driven preference to mention grounds (big objects) prior figures (smaller objects). compared bilinguals’ Dutch Sign Language (N = 18) those of their non-signing ( N 20) deaf signing peers 18). In speech, bilinguals expressed more ground-first descriptions fixated than non-signers, showing influence from sign. sign, they used as many signers equally often, demonstrating no speech. Cross-linguistic word order appears be one-directional modulated by differences.

Interactivity During Spoken Word Recognition: Evidence from Bimodal Bilinguals

We explore the role of top-down information in language processing by investigating parallel language activation in bimodal bilinguals, who are fluent users of a spoken and a signed language. In an eye-tracking study, bimodal bilinguals showed activation of their signed language while receiving input in English only. Since spoken and signed languages do not share structure, the results suggest ...

Dual language use in sign-speech bimodal bilinguals: fNIRS brain-imaging evidence.

UNLABELLED The brain basis of bilinguals' ability to use two languages at the same time has been a hotly debated topic. On the one hand, behavioral research has suggested that bilingual dual language use involves complex and highly principled linguistic processes. On the other hand, brain-imaging research has revealed that bilingual language switching involves neural activations in brain areas ...

Pitch Affects Estimates of Space but not Vice Versa

The idea that we think about relatively abstract domains (like time) in terms of more concrete domains (like space) but not vice versa can be traced to conceptual metaphor theory. Experiments using verbal and/or visual stimuli suggest a deep ontological basis for space-time asymmetries. Yet vision makes a privileged contribution to spatial processing raising questions about modality. Recently, ...

Implicit Spatial Length Modulates Time Estimates, But Not Vice Versa

How are space and time represented in the human mind? Here we evaluate two theoretical proposals, one suggesting a symmetric relationship between space and time (ATOM theory) and the other an asymmetric relationship (metaphor theory). In Experiment 1, Dutch-speakers saw 7-letter nouns that named concrete objects of various spatial lengths (tr. pencil, bench, footpath) and estimated how much tim...
